The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has appointed its first female Editor-in-Chief, Mrs Hadiza Aliyu.
Before her appointment recently, Mrs Aliyu was Director of Marketing of the agency.
She was at different times, the Head of Control Desk, Entertainment Desk, Science and Technology Desk, as well as the Head of Health and Gender Desk in the Editorial Department.
She was also the coordinator of the NAN/UNFPA project of the agency from 2019 to 2024.
A member of the Nigeria Guild of Editors, Mrs Aliyu holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communication from the University of Maiduguri, Borno State.
She joined the News Agency of Nigeria in 1992 after her NYSC, where she taught at Itolo Girls School, Surulere, Lagos.
Born in Kaduna in 1968 to the family of Alhaji Abubakar Adams Biu, former Commissioner, Borno Civil Service Commission, she attended Yerwa Practising Primary School in Maiduguri from 1975 to 1980 and Government Girls College (GGC) Maiduguri from 1980 to 1985.
She will be leading an editorial team of more than 500 editors and reporters spread across the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, Lagos Directorate, 35 state offices, as well as 18 district offices.
Late Mrs Remi Oyo was the first female Managing Director of NAN.
Executive Director of Media Career Development Network, Mr Lekan Otufodunrin congratulated Mrs Aliyu on her appointment and wished her a successful tenure.
He urged the agency to continue to live up to being a reliable news agency for getting nationwide reports.
