Three of our interns in the reports below share their experience since joining us, highlighting the skills, engagements and other opportunities.
Ayomide Victor Salami, Olabisi Onabanjo
‘I have learned how to conduct proper research’
I got accepted into the programme through my uncle. Initially, I had planned to do my internship at my school, but due to the insecurity in the area during the holiday, I had to reconsider. I reached out to him and explained the situation, and he told me he would get back to me within a week.
He later contacted me and asked me to message Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, who then told me to resume the following week. However, I was unable to start at that time because I was sick.
When I eventually resumed, on my first day we were asked to carry out research on a topic titled, “Beyond Every Viral Video: What Makes a Good Legislator?” This gave me a good introduction to the expectations of the programme.
Shortly after, we went to Ikeja, where he had an interview, and I was able to experience firsthand how a TV interview is planned and conducted. I also had the opportunity to explore parts of Ikeja, which made the experience even more interesting.
So far, I have learned how to conduct proper research, gained more knowledge about Ogun State, and understood the meaning of the 5Ws and H in journalism. I am also learning more about journalism, media practices, and even creative ideas from Mr. Otufodunrin and Mr. Dayo Emmanuel. To my fellow interns, it has been great meeting you all. I look forward to learning more, improving my skills, and making the most of this opportunity as I continue this internship journey.

‘It’s been a wonderful learning experience’
Before I applied for an internship at MCDN, I had applied to another organisation. However, due to some circumstances, I could not continue with them. Later, a friend introduced me to MCDN by connecting me with Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin. After speaking with him, I was asked to resume work. On my first day, I was introduced to the organisation, what it does, and my responsibilities. I was also informed that I would be working twice a week.
Working with Mr. Otufodunrin has been a wonderful learning experience because it goes beyond office work. I have had the opportunity to attend several important events and see the practical side of media and communication. One of the events was organised by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, where a book was launched, and speakers discussed the forthcoming elections and other important national issues.
I also attended a memorial programme held in honour of the former Lagos State Governor, Late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, where speakers reflected on his achievements, discussed the upcoming elections, and shared their expectations for the country’s future. In addition, I visited a television station where I observed how television programmes are planned, produced, and presented.
Throughout my stay at MCDN so far, I have also improved my writing skills. I have learnt how to construct better sentences, carry out proper research, and present my ideas more clearly. Every experience has helped me grow both academically and professionally.
Although I have learnt a lot already, I know there is still much more to learn, and I look forward to gaining more knowledge and experience during the rest of my internship.

‘My experience at MCDN has been an unveiling’
My internship journey at the Media Career Development Network (MCDN) began through the kindness of Mr. Ogunwale Matthew, who referred me to Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, the CEO of this great organisation. I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow in such a professional environment.
So far, my experience at MCDN has been an unveiling. Every assignment and event I have attended has broadened my understanding of journalism and the media industry. The media lectures and professional engagements have given me practical exposure that goes beyond what is taught in the classroom. They have strengthened my appreciation for journalism and helped me see its impact on society.
Although I do not intend to pursue journalism as my primary career path, my internship has made me realise that journalism is a noble and highly respected profession. It is a field that requires integrity, commitment, and a genuine passion for serving the public. I have come to appreciate that journalism is not simply about earning a living but about informing, educating, and holding society accountable.
My time at MCDN has also helped me build resilience. Every task and learning experience has challenged me to improve my communication skills, think more critically, and approach media work with greater professionalism. More importantly, it has given me a more positive perspective on journalism and the important role journalists play in nation-building.
As I continue this internship, I look forward to becoming a better writer and communicator. I particularly want to develop the ability to analyse trends, write strong political news stories, and produce reports that are balanced, accurate, and objective. I believe these are essential skills for every media professional, and I am eager to learn them through the guidance and opportunities available at MCDN.
Overall, this internship has been a rewarding learning experience, and I am excited about the knowledge, skills, and professional growth that lie ahead.
