‘How I created ‘Tales of a Naija Journalist’ cartoon’

My name is Chika Mefor-Nwachukwu. I am an investigative and community development reporter with THE WHISTLER Newspaper. I am also the creator of the Tales of a Naija Journalist, a comic series on Facebook that follows the everyday lives of Nigerian journalists through Bayo, Ada, and George.

I started the series as a fun way to learn AI and storytelling. I didn’t expect what happened next.

Journalists started calling and texting me from newsrooms across the country. They tell me the comic captured what they are going through at their workplaces.  Some shared their own stories, and I have turned a few into new episodes.

Weeks back, an editor even sent me a message and asked if he was a ‘good’ editor when we worked together.  That message told me the comics are doing more than entertaining. They are pricking consciences.

The comic has sparked real conversations about newsroom culture, unpaid wages, burnout, safety, and mental health. But it is not just about problems. Every episode also shows a path to solutions, because journalists deserve better, and newsrooms can be better.

Journalists have the responsibility to hold society accountable. But for them to do their jobs well,  they need to be treated with dignity, paid fairly, protected on the job, and given room to do ethical, impactful reporting.

My ‘fun’ creation is slowly making an impact… This is why I will keep creating. We are now on Episode 18, and my next step is to take the Tales of a Naija Journalist across other social media platforms so that more newsrooms and readers can join the conversation.
