Forty journalists across media houses in the country have been shortlisted by the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), Abuja to participate in the first series of its Investigative Journalism training programme.
The training programme scheduled for June 10 to June 12 in Abuja is part of the Nigerian Investigative Reporting Project, NIRP, a reporting and publishing initiative funded by Ford Foundation.
Project Manager, Tope Shaba in a statement explained that the training is aimed at building capacity for journalists in the country to effectively play their role in promoting accountability and good governance.
According to Shaba, the project which runs for two years aims at equipping the selected journalists with Investigative Journalism skills and techniques.
As part of the project, the journalists would be able to access funds of between $1,000 and $5,000 to pursue investigative story projects that have direct impact on their communities.
The 40 successful journalists were shortlisted from over 80 applications from print, electronic and online media nationwide.
The selection committee composed of ICIR staff and some respected editors carefully went through each individual application based on the selection criteria outlined in the ‘Call for Applications’.
Names of successful applicants are available on the NIRP website (http://nirp.icirnigeria.org/). Further information about the training programme and the project can also be obtained on the website.
