As part of our resolve to monitor journalism and media conferences worldwide, we followed presentations and discussions at the 20th International Symposium on Online Journalism in Austin, TX from Apr. 12-13, 2019.

Find below some of the insightful tweets from the conference.

Dear young journalist who wants to make up their job title: – Understand your soft skills – Network, you can’t cold apply your way into an emerging job – Get interested in something. Read about it. Write about it. Tweet about it. Be an expert so people come to you. #ISOJ2019

A great way to think about the future of journalism from @mthomps: Cultivate a media ecosystem. If we don’t excite the public with our work, then we will lose. #ISOJ2019

Newsrooms have so much data – whether you are small, medium or large – there is so much potential there to be explored – I agree with @lisagibbs954 #isoj2019

Wisdom from @nikkiusher “Just because everyone can be heard doesn’t mean everyone can be listened to.” #ISOJ2019

How to get successful local coverage? “Don’t just be in a community, be of it.” PREACH. Also, serve consumers where they are and in ways that are not abusive. Build long-term relationships with them. #ISOJ2019

Stop asking who is a journalist, ask what is journalism and what does it imply for people working in it. @mthomps #ISOJ2019

.@mthomps, editor-in-chief of @reveal, called for journalists to unlearn many of the things learned during the “Golden Age” of journalism. Story coming soon. @ISOJ2019 #ISOJ2019 – at The Blanton Museum of Art

On finding a solution for local news: “If there is a need for information, the world will figure it how to pay for it.” – @hblodget, #ISOJ2019

Why @mthomps went to CIR is why I went back to local. Telling important stories in places that are not NY/DC means not being there, not parroting national news and focusing on other places and people. I feel so strongly about that.

I’m tired about people saying how bad comments sections are. They often are, but that’s because we’re not investing in them or paying attention to them. How about we change the strategies of what we do? – @mayerjoy (Preach!)

.@mthomps is the GOAT. #ISOJ2019 “The public will only support our work if they believe it is a more effective way of participating in a democracy than posting on Facebook.”

Is it time to distinguish media from journalism? (I mean, yes.) Bc they’re not the same. #ISOJ2019

One massive takeaway from @davewiner’s keynote: journalists need to better understand the technology they report on. Suggests a boot camp to teach them. He’s right, and this is a very very good idea. #ISOj2019
