The International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) has urged journalists and media organisations to utilise its newly launched NativeAI tool improve newsroom productivity.
The call was made at a one-day sensitisation meeting with journalists and media stakeholders in Lagos State on November 5.
Speaking during the meeting, ICIR Executive Director, Mr Dayo Aiyetan said the tool was designed to help journalists and others save time, usually spent on transcribing and translating media content.
“We designed a technological solution to deal with practical problems in the newsroom. It’s not just about transcribing interviews but also translating them,” he said.
The tool currently supports English and three major Nigerian languages which are Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo, with plans to expand to other local and African languages.
The Programme Officer Ms Eunice Enoch in her presentation described NativeAI as an innovation that “reduces one hour of work to five minutes”.
She emphasized that the platform was developed to solve problems faced by journalists, including the hearing impaired community in order to make information accessible to all regardless of their challenges.
ICT Officer Abdulazeez Gobir in his session conducted practices which allowed attendees to record, upload, and test the tool.
He guided participants through the use of the tool that NativeAI generates speech-to-text transcription, instant translation, and live event transcription that can produce clear results that can aid journalism.
