The staff strength of The Punch Newspaper has been boosted with 20 young journalists who resumed on April 1.
They were recruited after intensive written and oral interview from a pool of applicants who responded to a call for application by an unnamed national newspaper.
Before fully resuming work, the new staff have been undergoing training to enhance their editorial skills.
The management staff of the company declined to speak on the new recruitment saying it is against company policy to volunteer such information.
The advert the applicants responded to had stated that the paper is seeking to employ 25 excellent writers for beat reporting, feature writing, investigative stories and so on.”
“The ideal candidates are preferably young with excellent writing skills. Any degree is fine so long the candidate has excellent writing skills, is passionate about journalism and is ready for new challenges.
“Successful candidates will receive the company’s monthly entry-level pay of N170k (net), transport N20k monthly, pension, paid annual leave 28 days, 13th-month salary and funding for special investigative stories etc.”

They were also requested to submit a 500 essay on “Journalism in a rapidly-changing world” with their application.
Before this new recruitment, the newspaper has been filling vacancies created by the sack of some staff due to the impact of COVID-19 and those who had earlier resigned their appointment.
Some old staff of the company say they are happy with the massive recruitment which according to them will reduce the pressure they have been experiencing due to few hands to take on various assignments.
“Some of us have had to cover many beats and do the work meant for more than one staff due to vacancies that have not been filled for a while now,” a staff who does not want to be quoted stated.
