Vacancy: Commissioning Editor Nigeria at The Conversation Africa

The Conversation, a leading international media platform, publishing research-based news and analysis is looking for a suitable candidate to fill the position of Commissioning Editor Nigeria.

The Commissioning Editor will be responsible for developing content across a range of sections in the West Africa region, engaging with the African academy to become a world-class, open-access source of inspired news content, freely available to the public and other media.

Key Functions include:

  • Building West African-focused content
  • Article selection and research
  • Commissioning and editing copy
  • Managing content across all sections, but with a particular focus on health and development-related content for West Africa
  • Secure and protect the good name and reputation of TC-Africa
  • Manage complaints and other editorial issues in the section
  • Support the Regional Editor, West Africa and the Strategic Partnership Officer in West Africa with relevant contacts within the Nigerian academic and research sector.
  • The Commissioning Editor will also manage stakeholders and maintain and develop key academic author partnerships

Qualifications & experience requirements are:

  • Experience in journalism and editing
  • Familiarity with health and development related journalism would be an advantage
  • Experience in online production
  • A commitment to the charter of The Conversation and a vision for its success in Africa
  • Knowledge of TC-Africa’s policies and procedures and regional political and policy environment.
  • Knowledge of the media environment and a network of contacts and familiarity with key experts and publications in your preferred field.

Skills requirements include:

  • Strong organisation skills, ability to write to a daily deadline, manage multiple tasks and work as part of a team
  • Strong relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as within a small team
  • Care and attention to detail
  • An ability to generate compelling story ideas
