On 20th January, the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) and Social Justice founded by globally acknowledged Investigative Journalist, Fisayo Soyombo, marked the first anniversary of its commencement of publication.
In his message from the Editor-in-Chief, Soyombo recalled the promises the organization made at inception which included that it will practice journalism beyond press releases; truth beyond officialdom; unbiased reporting and journalism driven by personal integrity and faith in the profession.
Contrary to prevailing unethical practices in the media industry, FIJ also assured that it would be unmoved by pecuniary interests and be the people’s advocate, the voice of anyone on the right side of the law.
One year after, we acknowledge that the organization has done its best to live up to the promises and expectations of the public that has been yearning for more truly independent media platforms for reporting human rights abuses.

It’s investigative reporting by the young team of reporters that has earned the organization various awards have ensured that not only is the government at various levels held accountable but individuals and private organizations are subjected to necessary scrutiny.
FIJ reports have indeed been impactful considering the changes such as freedom from unjust police detention or extortion, freedom from oppression, recovery of lost funds to unauthorised banking transactions, recovery of investment scam funds and help for the needy which Soyombo highlighted in his message.
It is commendable that despite limited resources and threats from security agencies, organizations and individuals, FIJ has remained resolute in its commitment to being the people’s advocate.
As it begins its second year, FIJ should consolidate and expand its operations and continue to uphold best practices in its reporting. It should rev up its social-justice reporting as it has promised against the background of shrinking civil spaces for demanding justice by citizens.
We urge donors to continue to support FIJ and other platforms advancing freedom of expression and rule of law.
