A new executive has been elected for the National Union of Campus Journalists, Nigeria, (NUCJ) with Samuel Ajala, of the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti elected as the President.

Ajala who was Public Relations Officer in the outgoing executive scored 88 votes to defeat his opponent, Abdulbasit Abdulazeez who had five votes.

Others elected in the election are Eze Glory as the Vice President, Uchenna Igwe, Secretary, Yahaya Nurudeen, Publicity Relations Officer 1 and Alawode Vindication as Publicity Relations Officer 2.

Abiola Precious emerged as the Union’s Financial Secretary; Oluwatobiloba Odeyinka, South West Zonal Coordinator and Emme Emmanuel, North East zonal coordinator.

NUCJ is a body that governs all student-directed press bodies in Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

The election was held on Saturday, the 23rd of January between the hours of 9 am and 12 pm.

According to the electoral committee chairman, Uthman Samad, 124 voters were registered while 93 voted.

According to the memorandum released by the electoral committee, the inauguration would hold on Sunday by 1 pm.

The new president in a statement thanked God for his election, noting that although it was not an easy task, he is excited that his vision has become a reality.

He also thanked those who supported him to make this vision a reality.

“Thanks to UCJ FUOYE for discovering me. I believe we can make NUCJ great again. We hope to create a good legacy that will last NUCJ for the next decade,” he said.

Iretomiwa Dele-Yusuff, the President of Union of Campus Journalists, FUOYE chapter congratulated Ajala on his election.

She expressed her pride in UCJ FUOYE which was founded two years ago and she spoke about the milestones achieved in those two years.

“I hope this will serve as an inspiration to every individual and every organization prepared to take the first step. I am particularly proud of Samuel Ajala for bringing us to the limelight. I am sure he will make us proud,” she stated.

Daniel Whyte who served as the president of UCJ FUOYE in the 2018/2019 academic year expressed his excitement about the union’s achievements. While some members of UCJ FUOYE have been selected for various fellowships, some were nominated for the Campus Journalism award.
