Q: Since I completed my NYSC I have been applying for media jobs but I am yet to get any positive response. I wrote a test for a newspaper house vacancy but I have not heard from the organization after weeks. What do you think is the problem?

A: Congratulations on the completion of your NYSC. The truth is that jobs are scarce in the media industry like in any other sector. You have to keep applying for advertised vacancies and the ones you hear about if you are keen on working in media organizations.

You will be contacted if you pass the test but you can call anyone you know in the media house to find out what the situation is.

Meanwhile, while waiting for employment start acquiring necessary skills for the kind of job you want. If you want editorial jobs, start writing articles and stories for publication in print or online. Start a blog to showcase your writing or develop programme ideas for broadcast stations.

If you are not versatile in use of computer and social media, this is the time to learn them.

To keep track of vacancies, you have to go beyond newspaper or broadcast media vacancies. There are now many employment organizations and websites. You may need to subscribe to their alert.

It’s too early to start getting worried about not getting a job or thinking you are jinxed. It could take some time, but you will sure get a job if you have what it takes to be hired.
