Four Nigerian journalists are among the 12 fellows selected by the Climate Tracker in collaboration with Hivos Energy for it’s African Sustainable Energy Reporting Fellowship.

The Nigerian fellows are Niyi Oyedeji, Amos Abba ( both of International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), Oladeinde Olawoyin of Premium Times and  Jennifer Ugwa.

The selection process started with the submission of the energy-related story after which over 30 applicants were shortlisted and trained for six weeks.

“We were then asked to submit a pitch, we wrote the story and eventually submitted it. We were graded based on our performance during the training, pitching and story submission,” Oyedeji told Media Career.

This fellowship will span another eight weeks, during which the fellows would be given grant to write energy-related story and undergo another series of training.

While announcing the list of the fellows, Chris Wright, the Managing Director, Climate Tracker stated that it was a difficult task selecting the final 12 candidates out of the pool of journalists that applied and participated in the first phase of the competition.

According to Wright, Climate Tracker would support the fellows in telling in-depth stories focusing on key sustainable energy challenges facing their respective countries.

He explained that the fellowship aims at expanding the journalism skills and experience of the fellows to enable them to dive into energy challenges that they may not have explored before.

“The fellows are expected to collaborate with the other fellows from across Africa, learn from the guidance and additional training provided by Climate Tracker, publish an in-depth story in a national publication and as well work with Climate Tracker to pitch their stories to international publications, ” Wright stated.
