Accomplished journalist, digital media pioneer, and Publisher of The Eagle Online, Mr. Dotun Oladipo is dead.
Oladipo, former President of Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 56.
Friends and close associates revealed that he had been at work earlier in the day at his Lagos office before suddenly feeling unwell. He personally drove himself to a nearby hospital for medical care, where he passed on shortly after.
The sudden news of his death sent shockwaves through the industry he dedicated over three decades of his life to, prompting an outpouring of emotional tributes from top government officials, colleagues, and various media groups and organisations he belonged to.
Oladipo was politics editor at PUNCH Newspapers and also served as a member of the newspaper’s editorial board.
Before joining The PUNCH Newspapers, he was a staff of the defunct Newswatch Magazine and later worked with Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass, and The Sun before founding Eagle Online.
The former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers holds a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication from the Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, in 1992.
He sharpened his craft in prominent print newsrooms, serving with distinction at the Nigerian Tribune, The Punch (where he excelled as Politics Editor), The Sun, and Nigerian Compass.

His contributions to political journalism and the digital media space will remain unforgettable.”

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed heartbreak over the news, highlighting Oladipo’s role as both an exemplary professional and a community pillar.
“Dotun Oladipo was one of Nigeria’s most prolific journalists and media entrepreneurs. He made numerous positive impacts in his lifetime, contributing meaningfully to the growth of journalism, especially through his pioneering efforts in online publishing in Nigeria.”

As a former President of GOCOP (2017–2021), Oladipo was instrumental in shaping the structure and credibility of online journalism in Nigeria. Current GOCOP President Danlami Nmodu shared a moving tribute:

He is survived by his wife, children, extended family, and a wide network of colleagues whose lives and careers he touched.
