John Ajayi: A legacy of brand journalism excellence

EDITORIAL on the death of the Publisher and Managing Director, MARKETING EDGE, Mr John Ajayi.

On December 10, the management of Nigeria’s authoritative brand and marketing magazine, MARKETING EDGE, announced the death of its Publisher and Managing Director, Mr John Ajayi at 62.

According to the statement announcing his passing, Ajayi will be deeply missed for his thought leadership, consistency, commitment, dedication, and resilience.

We join in mourning the sudden death of Ajayi, who, as the company rightly noted, was a man whose passion undoubtedly transformed marketing communications through various media platforms and programmes.

A graduate of English Language from the University of Lagos and a master’s degree holder in Political Science from the same institution, Ajayi, before establishing MARKETING EDGE, worked with other media organisations, including The News magazine, THISDAY newspaper, and Comet.

A Fellow of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) and the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria, widely regarded as a pioneer of brand journalism in Nigeria, Ajayi will be remembered for elevating industry standards, promoting ethical practice, and creating platforms that spotlighted excellence and innovation.

At the Media Career Development Network, we particularly remember Ajayi as a media owner and manager who prioritised continuous training for his staff. Over the years, he invited us to facilitate various trainings on emerging areas of media practice to ensure that his staff have relevant contemporary skills.

We urge other media managers to emulate the late Ajayi for his deliberate investment in human resource development and his commitment to best practices in the media and marketing industry.

Indeed, Ajayi was an exemplary journalist and trailblazer who excelled as a media entrepreneur and niche-focused publisher. We urge the Board and Management of MARKETING EDGE to sustain Ajayi’s legacy by maintaining the magazine’s leading position in its area of coverage.
