The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) is set to hold its fifth edition of the Report Women! Female Reporters’ Leadership Programme (FRLP) Fellowship induction and award presentation ceremony.

 

Scheduled to take place on September 4, 2023, in Lagos, the WSCIJ, Report Women FRLP Fellowship will confer fellowships on 12 exceptional female reporters and recognise select individuals for their outstanding performance.

 

According to a Press Release signed by the Executive Director of WSCIJ, Mrs Motunrayo Alaka,  the 2023 cohort of the Report Women FRLP Fellowship is a component of the Report Women! News and Newsroom Engagement project supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation designed to champion improved representation of women as leaders in news and newsroom through capacity development for female reporters, strategic engagement with media executives and staff.

 

The cohort of the Report Women FRLP fellowship which started in April, 2023 with a physical 3-day training and a continued four-month mentorship, had selected 12 participants and supported them to execute leadership projects to enhance the leadership roles of women within the newsroom and published story projects focused on women and girl-child issues.

 

Among the topics explored are the multifaceted impacts of insecurity on the well-being of displaced women and children, as well as the disconcerting prevalence of human rights violations and unethical practices within surrogacy facilities.

Other stories delve into the pervasive delays in securing justice for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and shed light on the challenges faced by female coaches striving to make their mark in male-dominated athletic leagues.

 

The initiative extended its focus to issues of gender equality and women’s rights, addressing critical matters such as the preservation of women’s inheritance rights. Geographical diversity is also evident in the subjects covered, with stories uncovering the perils posed by traditional birth attendants in the rural regions of the northeast, as well as the exploitation faced by female cleaners in certain parts of the north-central region.
