The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development ((CJID), in collaboration with Mental Health KAFE (MHKAFE) and the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria (APN), recently published a Mental Health Reporting Toolkit for Media Professionals in Nigeria.

The Toolkit aims to reduce stigma and increase awareness by building the capacity of media professionals for effective, responsible and ethical mental health reporting in Nigeria.

The very comprehensive handbook, among others, covers ethical mental health reporting guidelines, best practices for reporting sensitive mental health topics, strategies for working with vulnerable populations and recommendations for self-care for media professionals.

The publication of the Toolkit is very commendable as it has the necessary content to enhance the capacity of journalists to perform the vital role of informing and educating their audience on mental health issues which deserves more understanding and attention in the country.

As the survey which is the basis for the Toolkit rightly indicated, the present coverage of mental health issues in the media is not satisfactory and constructive. Most media reports on mental health reinforce the myths and misconceptions that stigmatize persons living with the conditions.

With one in every four Nigerians estimated to experience a mental health condition at some point in their lives, it is necessary for the media to be adequately equipped to be involved in the advocacy to reshape public perception and attitude about health conditions.

As the Founder of Mental Health KAFE, Deborah Adenikinju stated in the Preface of the Toolkit, we join in urging media professionals in Nigeria to adequately utilize the handbook.

“As we embark on this shared mission, let us remember that every word written can potentially change a life. Together, we will build a nation where mental health is a priority and no one suffers in shame or silence. Let’s make a difference, one story at a time.”

We also implore journalists to utilize the recommendations for self-care for them to be in a good state of health to effectively perform their job and live well.
