Nigerian journalist, Philip Obaji, is one of the three finalists for the 2023 One World Media (OWM) International Journalist of the Year award.

Obaji, a freelance journalist/The Daily Beast, made the shortlist for the award along with David Pilling, Africa Editor of the  Financial Times and Bel Trew of The Independent according to the announcement by the organisers on Thursday.

The award recognizes a filmmaker or journalist working in any medium who has contributed most to international journalism during the past year.

Obaji was nominated for his two-and-a-half-year investigation that uncovered how teen girls were advertised as maids and sold on Facebook.

A winner will be named for the award on June 21 at Curzon Soho, London.

The International Journalist of the Year award is one of 15 categories of the prestigious OWM Awards, which celebrate the media’s best coverage of the global south, spotlighting underreported stories that break stereotypes, change the narrative and connect people across cultures.

Four other Nigerian journalists on the long list of nominees earlier released along with Obaji are Damilola Ayeni of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism, Damilola Banjo, Innocent Eteng of Prime Progress Media/ Christian Science Monitor and Yemisi Adegoke of BBC Africa Digital.

The 2023 shortlist in 15 award categories, was selected out of a record number of more than 600 entries from 110 countries!
