Programme Officer of the Media Career Development Network (MCDN) Lagos, Esther Adeniyi has stressed the importance of fact-checking for journalists to avoid publishing false information.

Adeniyi, who was the representative of the MCDN at a three-day digital skill and fact-checking training spoke at a step-down session on Monday at the MCDN office.

“It is the duty of the press to fact-check claims, but you cannot fact-check opinions. Journalists should be careful to fact-check with evidence before spreading information,” she stated.

According to her,  different types of information people often push out include misinformation, disinformation and mal-information.

“False information that can bring confusion is not necessary as it can not impact the community positively and should be fact-checked,” she said.
