The University of Lagos Council has approved the appointment of two professors of Mass Communication in the faculty of Social Science of the institution.

They are the head of the Department of Mass Communication, Dr Joseph Adepoju Tejumaiye whose tenure has been renewed for the next three years and Dr Abraham Oloruntola Sunday, both alumni of the department.

Their appointments backdated to January 24, 2020, was contained in a letter by the Registrar and Secretary of the Council, Mr Oladejo Azeez.

In a congratulatory message, the Executive Council of the Alumni Association of the department assured the two new professors and other staff of necessary support to have a faculty of Mass Communication in the institution.

“Our department now has three professors and so we are ready for what it takes to become a school or faculty. Part of what also makes it exciting is that two young Turks of the mid-eighties and nineties of our department along with other members of management will have the responsibility to execute this enormous program. You have UMCAA Congress and Exco solidly behind you. Congratulations again,” the President of the association, Mr Vincent Oyo stated.

Oloruntola is a communication researcher with a focus on Journalism Practice & Professional Ethics Research, media influence and international communication.

He has his B. Sc. and M. Sc. in Mass Communication in 1985 and 1991 respectively from the University of Lagos. In 2011, he got a PhD in Agricultural Communication from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.

Until his new appointment, he was an Associate Professor and Postgraduate Coordinator in t1he department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos.

He is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Media Career Development Network.

Tejumaiye who holds undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos is an expert in Political Communication with bias in the use of integrated marketing tools in political advertising and Integrated Marketing Communications.

He has taught in other tertiary institutions including Caleb University, Redeemer’s University, Olabisi Onabanjo University and Babcock University.

He was also a lecturer at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) and Independent Journalism Center both in Lagos.
