Pen Press Journalists, Promize Eze, popularly known as Chi Chi, a 300-Level student of Education Economics and Lawal Sofiyat, a final year student of Physics at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) have won the writing contest organized by News Digest Press.
Promize Eze who emerged as the winner of the contest and Lawal Soffiyat bagged the second runner-up in the contest was presented with a plaque award and a cash prize at a News Digest Festival held at the institution.
The News Digest is one of the five pressboards under the aegis of the National Association of Campus Journalists, UDUS.
The contest with the theme: “What If Division is the Solution?” aimed at improving writing in the north, especially among students is a contest meant for students in Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states.
Eze expressed his happiness over his emergence as the winner of the writing contest, noting that he least expected to emerge the best in the contest but only hope to win.
“I spent about 11 hours figuring out what to write. It was hectic but I’m glad it was fruitful. Don’t ever think you’re better than anyone. That I won doesn’t mean I’m better than anybody,” he said.
He, however, advised his fellow writers to trust in God and hope for the best in all their endeavors.
Sofiyat also expressed gladness over her emergence as the second runner-up in the contest, pointing out that she least expected winning the contest.
“I am happy, though, I was not expecting it. I simply participate because I love the topic, the insecurity and the division suggested are really worrisome.
She, however, advised her fellow writers to keep vying for opportunities, noting that rejection should not discourage them.
“Don’t stop even when you fail. I remember I wrote about Rape and Paedophile the last two years and I was not even shortlisted not to talk of winning. Give anything, everything that comes your way a try,” she advised.
