Normally, every journalist or writer should be paid for their writings like anyone offering a service, but there are times when they may be compelled to write for free for various reasons.

Deciding to write for free according to Journalist and Co-founder @SembraMedia, Janine Warner should, however, be based on a number of considerations and terms and conditions.

Warner at an interactive session on Media Sustainability organized by the International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ) said she would not mind writing for free if organization requesting for it cannot afford to pay for her write-up, but it must be on an issue she cares about and interested in.

It must also be a publication that is good enough to enhance her portfolio and career with prospects of good visibility.

Instead of writing completely for free, Warner suggested asking for a low fee while letting the organization being written to know the normal rate charged for a similar assignment

“Letting them know your normal charge will make them value your contribution more even if they don’t pay for or pay a low rate.

“Even though you are writing for free, have an agreement on what you will do for free, like how many stories you will write and within what duration.

“Let them know beyond which point they have to pay for your service so you are not accused of not doing what is required of you. Set boundaries and set expectations.

“Notwithstanding that you are volunteering, take your assignment seriously or don’t bother,” Warner advised.
