As part of our resolve to monitor journalism and media conferences worldwide, we followed presentations and discussions at the 20th International Symposium on Online Journalism in Austin, TX from Apr. 12-13, 2019.

How to get successful local coverage? “Don’t just be in a community, be of it.” PREACH. Also, serve consumers where they are and in ways that are not abusive. Build long-term relationships with them. #ISOJ2019

Why @mthomps went to CIR is why I went back to local. Telling important stories in places that are not NY/DC means not being there, not parroting national news and focusing on other places and people. I feel so strongly about that.

I’m tired about people saying how bad comments sections are. They often are, but that’s because we’re not investing in them or paying attention to them. How about we change the strategies of what we do? – @mayerjoy (Preach!)

One massive takeaway from @davewiner’s keynote: journalists need to better understand the technology they report on. Suggests a boot camp to teach them. He’s right, and this is a very very good idea. #ISOj2019
