The President of Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Funke Egbemode, on Thursday called on media professionals in the country to start assessing media roles in national development.

Egbemode made the call at the All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) in Port Harcourt.

She said the media occupied a prominent place in Nigeria’s socio-political landscape, adding “ that is why we are always reminded of our roles in the society”.

“Other sectors get intervention funds and bailouts but what do we get? We are watchdogs of every sector and I ask, who watches our back?

“Who watches our back, who bails us out when we run into storms, who intervenes when our bottomline disappears?’’ she asked.

Egbemode urged editors to use the conference to assess the media, ponder about the profession and its fate within the socio-political system.

She said that the media was a beleaguered industry in which both the profession and the professionals were not currently in a good fate.

“ANEC is for us to assess where we are and find a way to safety; we are in a world where everybody is quick to point out our faults,’’ she said.
