The job of many staff of Thisday Newspapers may be hanging in the balance following a memo on Tuesday terminating the appointment of staff, not “on duty and working”, when the publisher, Nduka Obaigbena arrived the Lagos office of the company.
Obaigbena, in the memo dated February 23, 2016 addressed to the senior management staff of the newspaper, said all staff whose names were not listed on the compiled list should have their salaries stopped and should no longer considered as working in the company.

Many staff of the company who are being owed about eleven months have reportedly not been reporting regularly in the office due to lack of money for transport and hectic traffic on the company’ office route.

Some editorial staff on some desks and department have resorted to being in the office only on their production days.

Following last Wednesday’s memo more staff have been reporting for duty, while those whose names were not on the list are making frantic efforts to justify their absence on the day it was compiled.

The memo, titled EVERY IMPORTANT STAFF NOTICE, reads:

“Dear All, Following a continuous and continuing spot check which climaxed today on LAGOS staff on duty and working, please find below a list of bonafide NON – EDITORIAL LAGOS STAFF of THISDAY NEWSPAPERS. The spot check will continue in ALL THISDAY locations.

“Those not on the list below cease to be staff of the company except they show with documentary evidence why they were not, and have not been at work. Editorial Staff have to show work with proof of stories filed and published tonight. Therefore only those listed below will be on the next payroll. If not listed, please conclude your disengagement process with the Admin department.”

The Accounts Department was directed to “prepare a new payroll for another month based on the list below. We will try and pay up current month plus one month arrears every month at least.”
