A Senior Lecturer of the Yaba College of Technology, Mrs Olorunyomi Omolara has been appointed as the new head of the Department of Mass Communication of the institution.
Her appointment for three years, with effect from August 30, 2024, following the election by the department, was announced in a statement by the Acting Registrar, Dr E.J. Akinwale.
She takes over from the former HOD, Mrs Funke Adesanya.

Olorunyomi holds a Master in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and is currently a doctoral student in the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, at Lagos State University (LASU).
She is an Associate member of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations, (NIPR), the African Council of Communication Education (ACCE, Nigeria Chapter) and the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN).
Responding to the appointment, Mrs Olorunyomi said she plans to enhance learning through more practical sessions and the use of projectors to ensure better understanding and interaction between students and lecturers.
“I also want to ensure that all academic staff perform academic activities including training, attending conferences and present papers, being part of professional bodies and being innovative enough to identify other sources of income apart from the present ones.”
President, Association of Mass Communication Students, Comrade Excellent Godwin hailed the appointment of Mrs Olorunyomi Omolara as the new Head of the Department.
Godwin said Olorunyomi’s appointment was well-deserved, noting that over the years, she has consistently made a remarkable and significant impact on the lives of students of the department.
“It has been a privilege to know Mrs. Olorunyomi since 2017 when I first began my National Diploma programme in Mass Communication at Yabatech. Her dedication to hard work, transparency, and integrity sets her apart, as she does not believe in shortcuts and always encourages us to strive for excellence.
“When I heard the news of her candidacy for Head of Department, I had no doubt that she would succeed, and now that she has been appointed, I am confident that her leadership will inspire and uplift the department. I trust that she will continue to uphold her resourceful spirit and bring innovation to the students’ body, fostering growth and excellence in all of us,” Godwin said.
He wished her the very best in the new role and looks forward to the positive impact she will “undoubtedly make in her tenure as HOD.”
AMCS President also extended his heartfelt appreciation to the former HOD, Mrs. Adesanya for her remarkable leadership and service as Head of Department.
“She has truly been an action woman, always proactive and deeply committed to the well-being of her students. Her tenure has been nothing short of awesome, characterized by her unwavering dedication, care, and passion for student success,” Godwin stated.
According to Godwin, Mrs. Adesanya’s leadership style has set a high standard, and her contributions have left a lasting impact on both the department and its students.
“We are grateful for all that she has done, and we wish her continued success in all her future endeavours,” he said.
