Media Career Development Network (MCDN) joins the global community in commemorating World Press Freedom Day, May 3, 2024.
This year’s theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the Environmental Crisis,” underscores the critical role of journalism in addressing the urgent environmental challenges facing our world.
Executive Director, Media Career Development Network, Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, in a press statement emphasises the significance of this year’s theme, stating that “All stories deserve to be told. But this one may be particularly decisive.”
According to him, the environmental crisis not only impacts ecosystems, but also the lives of billions worldwide. Through their reporting, journalists shed light on the upheaval and loss caused by climate change and biodiversity loss, inspiring action towards solutions.
“Exposing the crisis is the first step to solving it,” Mr. Otufodunrin adds, adding that journalists serve on the frontlines of our collective effort to safeguard the planet and ensure livable conditions for all.
Their courage and perseverance in uncovering stories from across the globe are instrumental in shaping a sustainable future.
” We commend Nigerian journalists and others worldwide already covering environment and climate issues and urge others to pay attention to critical issues that can prevent environmental crisis,” Otufodunrin stated.
Media Career Development Network is dedicated to supporting and empowering media professionals through training, mentorship, and advocacy initiatives. Our mission is to foster excellence and innovation in journalism while promoting press freedom and media integrity.
As we observe World Press Freedom Day, we call for continued support and recognition of journalists’ vital role in promoting transparency, accountability, and environmental stewardship.
