“Women journalists are a special breed, like diamonds covered with dry leaves. They are a stronger breed when compared to their male counterparts.”
These are the words of Juliana Francis, Deputy Editor of The EagleOnline and Publisher of SecurityNewsAlert.com, during a one-day workshop titled, “Leading (Media) Ladies” organised by Blessing Oladunjoye, Publisher of BONews, as part of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) Female Reporters Leadership Programme #ReportWomen.
Francis, who noted that “women journalists are special breeds, aptly referred to as the stronger breed”, emphasised the uniqueness of women in journalism.
According to her, “the more obstacles women journalists overcome, the more their sparkle and strength become evident and appreciated.”
Addressing the hurdles faced by women journalists, the award-winning Crime Reporter while sharing her personal experience, pointed out the disparity in award recognition between male and female journalists.
She noted that male journalists often receive more awards, which is a reflection of the gender biases that persist in the industry.
She however urged female journalists not to be discouraged but rather confront and dismantle these challenges head-on.
Francis urged aspiring female journalists to seize opportunities for learning and growth, regardless of the age or experience of their mentors.
“Wisdom and knowledge can be gleaned from experts at any stage of their careers. Therefore, seize opportunities for learning and growth, while seeking guidance and support”, she stated.
She reminded the participants that every challenge they face is surmountable, adding that they have the strength and capability to overcome any obstacles in their path.
