Winners have emerged in the first edition of the Screenplay writing competition organised by the department of Mass Communication, Lagos State Polytechnic and Creative Village Productions, USA, a media firm owned by an alumnus of the department.
Mass Communication students of the Polytechnic were asked to write a 15-minute television documentary screenplay on the “Sounds of Lagos”.
Eke Victor, who emerged the winner of the competition got the coveted prize of a 10-inch android tab, while the first runner up, Michael Orodare also got a 10-inch android tab and an opportunity to feature in Nollywood Thespian, Jaiye Kuti’s upcoming movie Oro Mi (a true life story), for exceptionally acting the “Sounds of Lagos” during the award presentation. Akindele Rebecca and Sunday Odeleye, who emerged second and third runner-ups respectively also got prizes.
The Director of Creative Village Productions, Olanrewaju Olakanlu of Mr and Mrs Kogberegbe television series, while speaking at the award presentation held at the Engineering Lecture Theatre Hall of LASPOTECH, said he decided to host the competition to give back to the Polytechnic that impacted him with knowledge.
On why he chose the topic “Sounds of Lagos”, Olakanlu said after looking round, he discovered that no one has done any project on the daily sounds that characterise the city of Lagos. He thanked the students for participating in the competition.
The Special Guest, Princess Adetope Kosoko, a former Registrar of the Polytechnic, in her keynote address, thanked the initiator of the competition for introducing the competition to the institution.
Kosoko charged the Mass communication students to learn to stand on their own by being creative and strive to be multi-skilled and vast in all areas of life and not only in the field of Mass communication.
Also speaking at the event, popular Yoruba actress, Jaiye kuti, advised the students not to lose their inner beauty because it is what they have inside of them that will make them stand out.
Meanwhile, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Samuel Sogunro has announced Jaiye Kuti and Olanrewaju Olakanlu as Ambassadors of the Polytechnic.
Sogunro made the declaration during a visit by the duo to his office on Thursday to rejoice with him on his birthday celebration.
He commended Olakanlu for reminding his alma mata and for deeming it fit to give back to the Polytechnic.
