Technology is redefining the global media landscape and Nigeria is not exempted from feeling the impact.
During my last semester at Columbia Journalism School, I had the opportunity of taking a course on “21st-century newsroom management” — oh what an exciting learning curve it was! One of our assignments had me researching on how tech was reshaping media business in Nigeria.
Some of the findings:
- Local journalists are becoming more tech savvy
- Bloggers are on the rise
- Over 50 percent of the Nigeria population have access to the internet — thanks to the increase in mobile penetration
- Government leaders have proposed an anti-social media bill to curb the spread of reckless information sharing. If passed into law, it might become a barrier to the growth of citizen journalism in the country.
- Advertisers follow the crowd. Bloggers get the money. If bloggers have the crowd, that is where advertisers will turn.
- Some media organisations have stopped printing due to the rising cost of production and declining ad revenue.
- Some news media are expanding investment in the newsroom — focusing more on digital journalism.
