In this editorial, we note that the honorary fellowship for two distinguished journalists affirms that excellence in journalism is appreciated not only within newsrooms, but also in the intellectual and literary world
The honorary fellowship of the Nigeria Academy of Letters (NAL) recently awarded to Saturday Editor, Tribune Newspaper, Dr. Lasisi Olagunju, and former Sunday Editor of The Guardian Newspapers, Mr. Jahman Anikulapo, is well-deserved.
Both recipients, including the Chairman of the Editorial Board of The Nation Newspaper, Mr. Sam Omatseye, and former Presidential Spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, who had earlier received the same award, are distinguished journalists and writers.
Olagunju is renowned for his incisive, well-researched columns and commentary, while Anikulapo is a cultural journalism icon whose immense contributions have enriched the development of the arts in Nigeria and beyond. Their recognition is an acknowledgement of the elevated journalism they have practised over the years that engages deeply with ideas, history, culture, and society.
It affirms that excellence in journalism is appreciated not only within newsrooms, but also in the intellectual and literary world. Beyond routine reporting, the writings of Olagunju and Anikulapo have been impactful, and they rightly deserve a place among outstanding writers honoured by NAL.
It is commendable that the Academy recognised their intellectual prowess and influence beyond traditional academia.
We applaud NAL for honouring Olagunju, Anikulapo, and others before them, and we urge the awardees to continue contributing to public discourse for the overall good of society. Other organisations and institutions should emulate NAL in recognising outstanding journalists who play a major role in informing, educating, and entertaining their audiences.
We also congratulate His Majesty, Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, who was also named an honorary fellow, as well as the new fellows of the Academy.
