We Created #IJF24 Playlists

The just concluded 2024 International Journalism Festival in Perugia was a very interesting and engaging one for participants across different continents.

At several sessions of vibrant discussions brilliant journalists explained complex issues and revealed findings concerning journalism and the journalists’ welfare.

Though we couldn’t attend physically, we followed as many live-streamed sessions as possible. We reckon that for those following the festival virtually, navigating the various sessions on a topical basis will be quite a task, so we created playlists.

We created themed playlists to follow discussions that have similar context or topics that can be followed by journalists. They are five in number, each creatively titled by our program officer to give an idea of what can be learnt in the videos lined up.

The first playlist, titled “How To News” gathers live-streamed videos of all sessions that focused on how journalism is being done sustainably in different climes. This isn’t the usual “what we think will work” presentations, it is what is “working for us and other people” talk, well moderated by equally brilliant journalists.

Our second playlist called “Saving Journalism” videos in this playlist were gathered from sessions that talk about practical and working strategies to ensure journalism not only survives the fight against dwindling funds, news avoidance, press attacks and repression against media that even force some to work in the exile but thrive in the face of all these challenges.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the talk of the town in any journalism gathering these days and as expected, sessions around AI were in abundance at the festival so we created a special playlist for you to catch up on the discusions. Of course we name the playlist AI in Journalism”. You can catch up with discussions around lessons from how small newsrooms used AI to enhance their work and solve problems during the AI in Journalism Challenge or how you can spot AI disinformation and even many more important aspect of AI for journalists to take note of.

Our fourth playlist is named Data & Investigative Journalism” after the topic of discussion in the live-streamed sessions gathered in the playlist. From sessions focused on outstanding data journalism projects of the 10 winners of the 2024 Sigma Awards to practical workshop on Geo journalism or how to use other investigative tools like Google’s Pinpoint for data and investigative journalism.

Lastly, we didn’t forget the main characters of the festival, the journalists themselves. That is why we looked for videos that talked about issues As it concerns the journalists”. In this playlist, videos of  live-streamed sessions talking about issues around journalist’s welfare, safety and how to fight against repressional tactics like SLAPP and even how to wade through extreme cases of being taken hostage especially in this time of war.

We will never say our playlists are exhaustive or has all the sessions you need to follow in the International Journalism Festival 2024, but we are very sure it will serve our purpose of creating it which is for you to easily start your journey of being up to date and conversant with international topics of discussions happenings around the journalism industry.

You can reach out to us if you feel there is something missing in the playlists or just about anything you need to get across to us.
