An emerging online news platform, with a physical office in Lagos, is currently recruiting for the positions of Online News Editor and Social Media Lead to expand its team.

 

ONLINE NEWS EDITOR

The job requires an editor who is as confident managing major breaking news coverage as commissioning on-the-day stories that work for digital audiences.

You will be responsible for executing the news agenda of the day, to decide what news stories to cover and which formats would work best for a digital audience

You will be responsible for writing news stories and features for the website

A passion for investigative, original stories and delivering high impact journalism

You will need to work on live pages, big news stories and follow up features. Often, you will also be required to help with live and breaking coverage from other parts of the world

Exercise editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism

Proofread text and correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors

Verify factual correctness of information, such as dates and statistics

Check text for style, readability, and adherence to editorial policies

Arrange page layouts of photos, articles, and advertisements

Rewrite text to improve clarity and readability

 

You should be able to demonstrate:

  •    The ability to quickly write engaging news copy, with attention to accuracy, context, impartiality and tone
  •    Strong editorial judgment with demonstrable experience of writing news stories and features
  •    Experience writing stories under pressure and responding to big and breaking news
  •    Experience using social media, search and audience data to determine what stories work well for digital audiences with a particular focus on youth

SOCIAL MEDIA LEAD

The overall goal is to ensure VISUAL APPEAL, GENERATE REACTION, ENGAGEMENT AND FOLLOWERSHIP

As the Social Media Lead, your key responsibilities will include:

Publishing and scheduling content: Create, manage and own output for the Context Newsroom social media accounts, ensuring the timely and strategic publication of content.

Managing team content output: Oversee the creation and delivery of native content across various social media channels, including videos, images, and graphics.

Social media campaigns: Develop and execute organic social media campaigns aligned with our long-term initiatives and projects.

Performance analysis: Utilise analytics tools such as CrowdTangle and Meltwater to continually assess and enhance the performance of our social media channels.

Team management: Lead and develop your team to meet and surpass key performance indicators (KPIs).

To be our Social Media Lead, News, you will likely have:

At least 3 years of experience: Demonstrated expertise in a social media role, preferably within a news organization.

Deep understanding of social media: Proficiency across various channels, with particular emphasis on LinkedIn, Twitter/X, Facebook and Instagram. This includes understanding the different audiences across these platforms, and how best to engage with them.

Copywriting skills: Strong ability to craft compelling and engaging social content.

Impeccable news judgment: A keen sense of what makes a story stand out in the rapidly evolving world of news and media, and how to make it stand out in busy social media feeds alongside other news brands.

Analytics proficiency: Familiarity with and understanding of analytics tools such as CrowdTangle, Meltwater, or equivalent platforms, and how to effectively interpret the information they provide.

Video content production: Experience in producing social native video content across multiple social channels, including familiarity with video editing tools such as Adobe Premiere.

Design experience: Proficient in creating visually engaging and accessible images, slideshows, and GIFs using graphic design platforms such as Canva.

Team management: Proven experience in managing and developing a team.
