CJID Next-Gen Internship Program.

The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development is calling campus journalists and Mass Communication students to apply for the Next-Gen/Campus Reporter project.

The Next Gen/Campus Reporter project of the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) offers an opportunity for young journalists to intern with mainstream media organisations in Nigeria.

Successful applicants will gain hands-on experience with leading media organisations, personalised mentorship from seasoned media professionals and a monthly stipend to support them during the internship, among others.

Earth Journalism Network’s (EJN) Virtual Media Workshop.

EJN is hosting a virtual media workshop in early May for environmental journalists in Africa seeking to report on the threats faced by great apes, particularly the impact of disease and other health considerations, as well as conservation strategies to protect these species and their habitats. 

The workshop will take place virtually on Zoom over three days in early May 2025, with 3 hours of training sessions each day. Participants who attend all three days of the workshop will also be eligible to apply for a story grant to produce journalistic work following the workshop. This will be awarded to up to 8 journalists.

Applications are open to journalists and media practitioners working in any medium from range countries in Africa; i.e. countries where the great apes live in their natural habitats: Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.

CJID Journalism Workshop on Legal Threats to Press Freedom, SLAPPs.

The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development is calling journalists based in the North Central on Nigeria to apply for a workshop on legal threats to press freedom.

The workshop titled “Navigating Legal Challenges, Laws that Criminalise Journalism, and Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs),” is a newsroom engagement workshop is facilitated by CJID in partnership with the UNESCO Global Media Defence Fund (GMDF).

It aims to equip journalists with the knowledge and skills needed to address legal threats to press freedom in Nigeria.

Freelance and independent journalists as well as female journalists are encouraged to apply.

DW Akademie International Media Studies Program.

DW Akademie is calling on journalists to apply for the next class of the International Media Studies master’s degree programme in Bonn, Germany. Application for this program ends on March 15, 2025.

The international media studies programme is a full-time, four-semester programme for journalists-in-training, media representatives from radio, TV, online and print and communication experts. It offers a mix of research, lectures, and practical experience, as it prepares students for careers in the communications and media industry.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers scholarships to up to 10 highly qualified applicants from developing countries. The scholarship covers the cost of living, accommodation, tuition fees and the inbound flight to Bonn.

Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent and have at least one year of media experience after obtaining their first degree.

The Journalism for Liberty Fellowship program

The Liberalist Centre’s Journalism for Liberty Fellowship program is designed for journalists interested in advancing liberty, free markets, and individual freedom through storytelling. 

Fellows will gain access to training, mentorship, and opportunities to publish their work. Whether you are investigating government overreach, exploring economic freedom, or highlighting human rights stories, this fellowship provides the resources and support to elevate your journalism.  

The 2025 cohort is open to media professionals from Nigeria, Kenya, and Zambia only!
