Students of the Lagos State University School of Communication have been charged to tap into the entrepreneurial opportunities in journalism which includes blogging, photography, and freelancing among others to facilitate employment after graduating.
The advice was given by the Online Editor, The Nation newspaper Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin the presentation of his book titled “Journalism of my life” on August 17 at the school’s external campus in Ojuelegba, Lagos.
In the 88-page book, Otufodunrin who has been a journalist for about thirty years recalls his journey in the industry during which he has worked in various media houses, attended fellowship programmes and organised trainings.
He also wrote about his days at the University of Lagos and active participation in major campus associations.
His experience on getting his first job was also featured in the book.
“When young journalists complain about how long and hard it is for them to get a job after service, I usually tell them that jobs have always been hard to get.
“After my youth service in June 1986, I had to wait for more than four months to find anything close to employment. I immediately started applying for jobs anywhere I heard mass communication graduates were needed,” Otufodunrin stated.
He explained that the book is dedicated to young journalists as a road map to help them navigate the increasingly tough media landscape.
100 copies of the book paid for by the Chairman, Editorial Board of The Nation, Mr Sam Omatseye was distributed to the students.
This is good for the development of journalism.
…Kodus to Mr. Otofodunrin on this. Your life is an inspiration for emerging journalists.
