At a recent communication conference, I listened for the first time, to Jimi Tewe, CEO of Inspiro Consulting and was intrigued by some thoughts he shared on career advancement.
I later bought four CDs of his past conferences which I have listened to thrice and have been meditating on some of the very inspiring perspectives of some of the various speakers on making a success of one’s career.
Fela Durotoye, CEO, GEMSTONE Group in one of the CDs made a very profound assertion which I find compelling to share in this piece.
According to him, any vision without clear details and plan of how it will be achieved is a wish.” If your vision does not have a name, if you cannot properly articulate your vision in writing and spell it out with clear steps to be taken and be committed to acting on it, you don’t have a vision. What you have is a wish, not a vision.”
Nobody gives to or supports a wish, he added. True indeed!
Like the popular saying, if wishes were horses, even beggars will ride.
Some journalists I know claim to have visions for their career, but based on Durotoye’s statement, what they have is a wish which may never be accomplished except it is properly defined.
Dear colleague, what vision do you really have for your media career?
Have you been wishing to acquire additional educational qualification or certification?
What particular qualification or certification do you really need?
What do you require to get it?
Which institution or organisation offers the qualification or certification?
When will you commence steps to accompany your vision?
Perhaps your vision is to publish a book at a point in your career.
The crucial questions to ask yourself are: What particular book do I want to publish? What will it focus on? Do I have an outline? When will I start compiling the content? Have I read similar books by other authors? What does it cost to publish the kind of book I have in mind?
Is it a skill you have been dreaming of acquiring? Are you dreaming of launching your own blog or any other thing?
Stop dreaming! Wake up! Dreams are not fulfilled by wishing, but by doing.
Do something today about your media career before it is too late.
Please share with me and other readers’ suggestions about how to fulfill media career visions.
NB: I appreciate all who have been reading, sharing, liking and responding to the previous editions of this dairy.
Thanks for your feedbacks and let me get more to enrich this series.
