Energy Editor of the New Telegraph newspaper, Adeola Yusuf has bagged the Africa Investigative Journalism Conference (AIJC) Bursary in South Africa.
New Telegraph reports that, the story, published in New Telegraph newspaper on Saturday, June 24, 2016 titled: “Mega Crude Theft: How $50bn stolen crude from Nigeria found its way to refineries in Europe, US”, was supported by an essay for the contest.
According to report, New Telegraph has earlier won several local and international awards since its entry into Nigeria’s media landscape on February 3, 2014.
Announcing the AIJC bursary award, Ms. Shireen Rubenstein of the Department of Journalism & Media Studies, University of The WitWatersrand, Johannesburg, said in a letter to the awardee that Mr. Yusuf would joined by other best investigative journalists from the continent between November 7 and 9 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
“Yusuf has, therefore, been invited by the Wits University in Johannesburg, South Africa for the 2016 edition of AIJC, the biggest gathering of investigative journalists, journalism students and professionals in Africa between November 7 and 9, 2016,” she said.
A Master of Science (MSc.) degree holder in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos, Yusuf started his educational training in Mass Communication at the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, where he graduated as the School of Communication and General Studies’ overall best student for both National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) in 2003/2004 academic session.
He obtained his Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Mass Communication at the Crescent University, Abeokuta and a Master in Oil and Gas class and a certificate in Advanced Writing And Reporting (AWARES) both from the Pan-Atlantic University. He has won several international awards, honours and recognitions in journalism, including the Thomson Reuters Foundation scheme on Illicit Finance Reporting in Africa, 2016. Yusuf is also the winner of Nigerian Media Merit Award (NMMA) Prize for Energy Reporter of The Year, 2015.
He is the first and only winner of most consistent energy reporter award by the highest body of petroleum experts in Nigeria, Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE).
He has travelled to major countries of the world for conferences, seminar and awards on energy reporting and investigative journalism, including Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, Texas, United States; Gulf of Guinea (GOG) conference in London, United Kingdom; and the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) function in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
“This new (AIJC) programme will feature seminars on financial investigations, the Panama Papers, how to encrypt your computer and emails, data journalism, multimedia storytelling, undercover reporting and the best African investigative stories of the past year,” Rubenstein said.
