CCIJ Data Journalism Workshop. Date: January 22, 2025

This hands-on workshop will be led by data journalist Kehinde Ogunyale from Dataphyte. He will train journalists on how to design infographics with Figma.  

Participants should expect an interactive session on best practices for designing infographics, step-by-step guidance on using Figma for data visualization and practical tips for telling powerful stories through charts, icons, and graphics with Figma

Internews’s EJN UN Ocean Conference 2025 Fellowship. Deadline: Jan 15, 2025

Applications for Internews’s Earth Journalism Network fellowship to support journalists to attend and report the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in June 2025 are still open. 

The fellowship support will cover non-refundable economy-class airfare, accommodation, meals, travel medical insurance and ground transportation costs related to the fellowship participation of the selected journalists.

Five to eight journalists from established media houses, reporting from any country with a coast, will be selected, to produce at least 2 in-depth stories or analyses to be published during the fellowship or within the two weeks following the fellowship.

Fellowship for Advancing Science Journalism in Africa and the Middle East. Deadline: January 15, 2025

Journalists based in Africa and/or the Middle East can apply for a one-semester fellowship hosted by the Knight Science Journalism Programme (KSJ) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Interested applicants must have at least three years experience reporting on science, health or environmental issues in the region to be eligible.

The selected fellow will join other KSJ fellows in a programme of study at MIT and other Cambridge/Boston area universities and in the seminars, training workshops and field trips throughout the semester.

The Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism. Deadline: January 31, 2025

Experience journalists passionate about economics and business offers can apply for this opportunity to enhance their understanding of business, economics, finance and technology through the 2025 to 2026 edition of the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship.

Fellows will spend two semesters at Columbia Journalism School and take most of their classes at Columbia Business School while receiving a stipend for the nine-month fellowship program.

RESOURCES OF THE WEEK 

Agence France-Presse (AFP) has launched a new level-based certificate course for journalists and students wishing to develop their online investigative skills. The initiative is part of its online digital investigation training with the support of Google News Initiative.

The courses are in 4 languages, free of charge and cover topics such as efficient online search, verifying pictures and videos, archiving, and tackling misinformation around elections, health, or climate. There are three levels of certificates in the program: basic, intermediate and advanced.

TOOL OF THE WEEK 

NotebookLM is an AI-powered note-taking and research assistance tool. It can help journalists keep materials and resources relevant to their current investigation or production in one place. Powered by Google’s Gemini 1.5, NotebookLM can be used by journalists to upload PDFs, websites, YouTube videos, audio files, Google Docs, or Google Slides to later be queried for relevant information and insights.
