Here are a few media training and scholarship opportunities for journalists to take advantage of this week.

Disinformation Summit (Virtual)

Journalists, fact-checkers, researchers, students, activists and others can register for this bilingual international event.

The Inter American Press Association, Bolivia’s Journalism Foundation and Proyecto Desconfío of Argentina launch a new edition of the Summit on Disinformation on Sept. 18-19.

This year’s edition will spotlight efforts in strengthening democracy against disinformation, in media strategies to counter misleading narratives, in innovation and artificial intelligence, and in media education and literacy. Speakers include representatives from more than 40 organizations dedicated to combating disinformation, including JournalismAi, the Journalism Trust Initiative, and the International Fact-Checking Network.

Columbia Journalism School 2025 Sulzberger Executive Leadership Program.

Columbia Journalism School is offering the 2025 Sulzberger Executive Leadership Program. And Google News Initiative is sponsoring scholarships for news leaders to attend.

 The program trains news leaders to lead innovation and solve strategic business challenges in a time of rapid transformation, uncertainty and opportunity.

Fellows in this five-month low-residency program spend three weeks at Columbia Journalism School in New York City, starting with a 10-day residency from January 6 to 17, 2025.

Fellows then work on their project and assignments back at their organizations and attend a weekly virtual cohort meeting. Fellows return for one final week of residency, May 19 to 23, 2025.

To support the program, the Google News Initiative is sponsoring four scholarships for underrepresented news leaders to attend.

The scholarship covers tuition as well as travel costs to New York City for the residency weeks

The Pulitzer Center AI Spotlight Series Workshop.

The Pulitzer Center is offering the workshop “Introduction to Reporting on AI” for journalists in Africa, Europe and Latin America as part of its AI Spotlight Series. 

The workshop is designed to train reporters with minimal or no knowledge of AI how to create a good AI accountability story, from quick turnaround stories to more ambitious investigations, and dig deeper into a few examples.

The virtual workshop will be held on September 30, 2024, and is offered in English and Spanish.

Columbia Climate School “Building Resilient Food Systems” Webinar.

 

The Columbia Climate School is hosting a virtual event, “Building Resilient Food Systems,” on Sept. 30, to discuss the complexities of food system resilience and how policy, innovation and global collaboration can protect and enhance food security.

Journalists interested in learning about global food systems and climate change can attend this webinar

The webinar features two panellists, Jessica Fanzo and Michael Puma, who are Columbia Climate School’s Professor of Climate and Director of the Food for Humanity Initiative, and Senior Research Scientist and Director of the Center for Climate Systems Research, respectively. It will be moderated by Jeffrey Shaman, Professor of Environmental Health Sciences and of Climate.

CJID Mental Health Reporting Toolkit

Even with the recent Suicide Prevention Day celebration calling on people to shun taking up suicide, news about it still unfortunately surfaced in headlines, this is why journalists need to continuously improve their capacity in reporting mental health issues to further sensitise the public.

The Mental Health Reporting Toolkit by the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) equips journalists with essential resources for responsible and sensitive reporting on mental health issues. The toolkit provides guidelines on language use, interview techniques, and ethical considerations to ensure accurate and compassionate coverage that avoids stigmatization and promotes understanding
