Africa’s creative scene is expanding with new opportunities for writers, journalists, and filmmakers. These programmes provide vital funding, mentorship, and exposure to help storytellers develop their work and share authentic African narratives globally.

The Republic Announces Black Atlantic Editorial Fellowship [Deadline: 3rd August]

The Republic has launched the Black Atlantic Editorial Fellowship, a six-month remote programme for early- to mid-career editors, writers, and journalists across Africa.

Five fellows—one from each African region—will receive mentorship, a $500 monthly stipend, editorial support, and workshop access. Fellows will commission and write original stories, develop a regional editorial theme, and host a public event.

Applicants must have at least three years’ experience and reliable internet. To apply, submit a three-page proposal, CV, 500-word statement, two writing samples, and two referees.

Applications are open until 5 p.m.  Sunday, 3rd August 2025. Selected fellows will be notified by September 2025.

Miles Morland Foundation Writing Scholarship 2025: £18,000 Grant for African-born Authors [Deadline: 22 September]

The Miles Morland Foundation Writing Scholarship supports African-born writers or those with African-born parents to produce their first draft of a full-length book in English.

Scholars receive a £18,000 grant paid monthly over 12 months, with possible extension to 18 months for non-fiction requiring extra research.

Applicants must submit a published excerpt (2,000–5,000 words) with proof of sale, a 400–1,000-word proposal for a new book of at least 80,000 words, a 200–300-word bio, and evidence of African birth or parentage. Scholars commit to submitting 10,000 new words monthly and, later, may receive mentorship.

Applications open 1 July and close 22 September 2025. This scholarship excludes poetry, plays, children’s books, and short story collections.

Africa Narrative Change Film Award [Deadline: 22 July]

Nominations are now open for the Africa Narrative Change Film Award, sponsored by Africa No Filter. The award seeks African filmmakers whose feature-length fiction, documentary, or animation films tell inspiring, optimistic stories that highlight Africa’s resilience, creativity, and opportunity.

Eligible films, completed and released between 2020 and 2025, should present new voices and heroes with agency in contemporary African settings and appeal to broad audiences both within Africa and internationally.

Filmmakers must be based on the continent or part of the diaspora.

Climate Reporting Gap Fellowship

Surge Africa and One World Media have launched the Climate Reporting Gap Fellowship to support six Nigerian journalists covering climate finance and energy transition.

The fellowship offers £3,000–£5,000 funding, one-on-one mentoring, and training to produce data-driven, community-focused stories across print, audio, video, or multimedia.

Projects must be completed by June 2026 and aim to make complex climate issues accessible and relevant to Nigerian audiences. This initiative is part of The Climate Reporting Gap Initiative.
