Longest jailed journalist freed after 18 years of imprisonment

Muhammad Bekjanov, a journalist and an activist from the Central Asian Republic of Uzbekistan has been released after 18 years of imprisonment.

Report has it that Bekjanov was imprisoned for an alleged attempt to kill the late president Islam Karimov but he later confessed that he was tortured into confessing to fabricate charges.

Further report said the recently freed journalist is also a brother to the exiled opposition leader Mohammed Salih.

Bekjanov and a colleague, Yusuf Ruzimuradov, are the journalists who have spent longest years in prison globally more than any journalist, while Ruzimuradov still remains in prison.
