Students of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) who recently completed their Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) at the Media Career Development Network (MCDN) have shared their memorable learning experiences in the organisation.
Speaking at the send off for them, the interns shared testimonials of various skills they learnt and the opportunities they had during the internship.
The interns, who spent two months honing their skills in various aspects of communication, expressed gratitude to the Executive Director of MCDN, Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, for his guidance, mentorship and coaching throughout their stay.
One of the interns, Zannu Oyindamola Precious noted that she was able to accomplish a range of tasks, including getting her reports published for the first time and designing experiments while working remotely from the comfort of her own home.
Another intern, Mustapha Kehinde Abigael who was initially hesitant to write reports due to shyness, credited the internship with helping her build confidence in her reporting and news writing skills.
Others shared testimonials about their enhanced report-writing skills, and journalism skills as well as the valuable opportunities they had to attend media conferences and events, network with professionals, and gain insightful knowledge from them.
Mr. Otufodunrin, commended one of the interns, Ibrahim Habeeb Irewole for his leadership skills in coordinating the interns, noting the common challenges in coordinating people and getting them to follow up.
He also emphasized the importance of adaptability and multitasking in today’s fast-paced work environment.
“Organizations are looking for individuals with diverse skill sets who can take on multiple roles,” he said, adding that “It’s essential for young professionals to be open to learning and exploring different areas of communication.”
The interns praised the MCDN team for providing a supportive and inclusive environment, which allowed them to grow both personally and professionally noting that they have been equipped with the skills, confidence, and mentorship needed to succeed in their chosen careers.
