Lagos NUJ to establish community radio station

The Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Lagos Council is set to establish a Community Radio station in Badagry.

This was made known by the State Council Chairman, Dr Qasim Akinreti, during a courtesy visit to the Akran of Badagry, De Whenu Aholu Menu-Toyi and Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Olusegun Onilude.

Dr Akinreti stated that Badagry as town is due for media presence hence the need to establish a community radio for the town, adding that the idea of community radio for Badagry was muted about six years ago by past leadership of the Union, but due to some hitches, it could not see the light of day.

He, further said that he had already spoken about the project with and got approval from  the  Governor of Lagos State Mr Akinwunmi  Ambode  at the 3rd quarterly town hall meeting . Dr Akinreti said he has also discussed with the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Honourable Kehinde Bamigbetan who equally welcomed the idea.

The NUJ Chairman, however enjoined the Akran to inform members of the community of the project because according to him, every member of the community will be carried along. He said as soon as licence for the radio station is secured from the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission, NBC, there will be a Town Hall meeting where NUJ and members of Badagry Community will sign a memorandum of understanding, MOU.

In his own remark, the Akran of Badagry, appreciated the Leadership of the Union for thinking of Badagry at this point and promised all the support needed.

The Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Honorable Onilude expressed happiness that what the NUJ is doing is giving Badagry a voice and pledged his support for the project, saying all critical stakeholders in the community will be carried along.
