Female journalists in Nigeria have been urged to take charge of their careers and
overcome limitations hindering their growth.
This call to action was made on Thursday, September 12 at a virtual workshop on
“Overcoming career growth limitations” in commemoration of the third anniversary of Step-Up for Women in Journalism Initiative (SWIJ).
The event brought together seasoned speakers, including the Executive Director of Media Career Development Network (MCDN), Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, who emphasized the need for female journalists to overcome complacency in career journeys.
Otufodunrin highlighted the importance of having regular career check-ups for journalists to know how well they are doing and take necessary steps to accomplish their career goals and aspirations.
He also suggested having accountability partners, collaborating with colleagues, having career mentors and upholding strong ethical values.
In his lecture, the Mass Media and Information Management Coordinator, SFCG, Mr, Sunny Dada,
explained the importance of having the necessary qualifications and skills acquisition for female journalists in their careers.
Head, south-south, Bureau of The Guardian and Executive Director of SWIJ urged female journalists to be intentional about their careers and recommended sustained training to ensure steady career growth.
A member of the National Association of Women Journalists ( NAWOJ) Doris Morrison, stressed the importance of cybersecurity emphasizing privacy on social media, and protecting family.

A broadcast journalist with the Nigeria Television Authority, (NTA) moderated the workshop.
