Students and young journalists have been urged to maximise freelance opportunities to enhance their media careers.
Journalist and communication specialist, Festus Iyorah, made the call during a two-day training and mentorship programme organised by the Media Career Development Network on the theme: Independent Journalism Opportunities in a Digital World.
The workshop, held on August 12th and 13th via Zoom, attracted media interns and aspiring freelance journalists.
Considering the evolving current journalism landscape where traditional newsroom roles are dwindling and the shrinking number of job opportunities for skilled journalists, Iyorah urged participants to rethink their career paths, suggesting that venturing into freelance journalism offers a promising alternative to secure a foothold in the industry.
According to him, “Freelance journalism is the art of establishing oneself as an independent news hub, empowering individuals to pitch and sell stories to a wide range of local and global outlets.”
He, however, emphasised that succeeding in the crowded field demands deliberate and strategic action and suggested a three-pronged framework to guide aspiring freelancers toward success, including the following:
*Practical Experience. According to him, participants should acquire hands-on skills through internships, newsroom stints, or volunteer opportunities to build a solid foundation.
*Specialised Skills. He advised participants to hone their abilities in writing, interviewing, and investigative research to stand out as professionals.
*Proven Track Record. Iyorah also advised them to compile their robust portfolio of published articles to showcase expertise and reliability.
He encouraged participants to identify a niche—a subject they are deeply passionate about—to define their journalistic identity, suggesting they list five areas of interest and refine them to the top two to focus their efforts.
“You should think of crafting concise, compelling proposals that highlight the story’s relevance and tie it to the journalist’s unique perspective or location,” he said.
He also highlighted the value of persistent follow-ups with editors to enhance the likelihood of story acceptance.
For uncovering story ideas, he shared actionable strategies advising participants to “Stay attuned to everyday happenings, as routine events can inspire impactful narratives.”
“Leverage social media to monitor emerging trends and uncover fresh perspectives.
“Stay updated on current events, engage with diverse individuals, and conduct thorough background research.”
