Editorial: Getting better at work in 2025

Every new year marks a milestone in the life of an individual, organisation or institution.

For a professional,  a new year adds to the number of years spent on the job or any endeavour he or she is engaged in.

Therefore, the new year is an opportunity to review what has been accomplished in past years and what can be improved to achieve career goals and aspirations.

Beyond counting years, it’s important to ensure one is making desired career progress and accomplishments.

As work fully resumes in 2025 for both workers in the public and private sectors after the Christmas and New Year holidays, we urge media professionals to set out to maximise every opportunity they can get to enhance their careers.

Everyone should recommit themselves to doing their work better than before and be excellent in the discharge of their duties and services rendered.

So much is changing in the media industry locally and globally that requires every media professional to acquire relevant skills to remain relevant in whatever aspect of the media they specialise in.

Many tasks are getting automated with many Artificial Intelligence tools now available to perform various routine assignments and it’s necessary to know how to utilise them efficiently and ethically without compromising standards.

Journalists should take advantage of various training opportunities by local and international institutions and non-governmental organisations to become better in their work and improve their productivity.

Media owners should invest more in providing necessary resources and training for their staff, especially on how to ensure the sustainability of their operations amid the dwindling fortunes of companies in the sector.

It’s necessary to set goals to be achieved in the new year with timelines for accomplishing them.

Necessary steps and actions should be taken at individual and organisational levels to record remarkable progress in every endeavour at the end of the new year.

At Media Career Development Network,  we remain committed to supporting journalists and other media professionals to achieve their career goals and aspirations.

We shall continue to offer useful resources, mentoring, coaching and counselling for all categories of journalists and media professionals in accordance with our mission and vision statements.

Look out for our 2025 Media Career Advisory to be published this month for useful guidelines on making your various efforts at getting better at your work count this year.

Welcome to 2025 and best wishes in your work, programmes and activities.
