CJID inaugurates AI Collective CSO/Media Advocacy group

Last week, the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) inducted 33 civil society organisations and media organisations into the Nigeria AI Collective CSO/Media Advocacy Group

Over the next six months, this initial batch of partners will design and implement projects to drive the responsible and ethical adoption of AI in Nigeria. This aligns with the country’s National AI Strategy, which prioritizes the responsible adoption of the sector, talent development, and the ethical deployment of AI.

AI has already changed the game, and it is here to stay. For Nigeria to meaningfully participate, the CSO and media ecosystem must be equipped with the right skills and competence to address the ethical, safety, and accountability challenges AI presents.

At the workshop, CJID presented preliminary findings from an ongoing study on how six Nigerian media organisations are framing AI and which voices are being amplified in reporting.

This milestone builds on CJID’s expanding AI portfolio, including:

✅ AI in Journalism Fellowship — 20 fellows have published over 30 AI-related stories in the past two months.
✅ AI in Universities Workshops — lecturers from 50 higher institutions trained on integrating AI into media and communication curricula.
✅ Five ongoing academic/policy research projects on AI innovation.
✅ Six AI tools developed to strengthen media practice, 3 tools developed by CJID, 3 developed by fellows.
✅ Two AI & Media Summits convening top tech companies, CSOs, and policymakers.
✅ Continuous fact-checking of AI-generated fakes across Nigeria’s digital landscape.

CJID’s AI work, funded by Luminate, is expanding rapidly, and this new Community of Practice marks the beginning of a collaborative phase with CSO and media partners nationwide.
