‘How communication students should use AI’

“The use of AI by mass communication students is good, it finetunes one work, fixes mistakes, and makes it look nice. But as a student or professional, you should not depend on it, your work will become robotic, AI encourages plagiarism”

This advice was given by the Public Relations Manager, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, (MAN), Omotayo Okewunmi during an online webinar titled Building Digital PR Strategies in the Tech Era to mark the first anniversary of Communicators Corner.

Okewunmi advised mass communication students to stay true to their work and do their best to avoid plagiarism or copy-and-paste.

“It is simply okay to have writer’s block, but that doesn’t give you the freedom to copy and paste from AI”.

“Don’t get me wrong”, she continued “AI great. It gives you the perfect ideas and headlines and it helps fine-tune your work, but it is advisable for students and professionals not to fully depend on it instead use it to improve what you know.”

She also spoke about public speaking, and why a PR person needs to master the art. “ People see it as many people in one room and you are on a stage addressing them, but no matter what platform you get to address people is public speaking.”

“Convincing people is public speaking or even one person. Take advantage of your audience no matter how small, learn and use PR strategies to your advantage, and know your audience, to resonate well with them and gain their attention,” she stated.

The Communicators Corner founded by Emmanuel Oladipo aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world application for Mass Communication students.
