The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has condemned the harassment of two of its reporters at the recent general elections in Nigeria.

BBC in a statement on Thursday condemned the acts as ‘completely unacceptable’ recalling that  Dooshima Abu and her counterpart, Ajoke Utohotse were assaulted on February 27, and March 9, respectively while monitoring election proceedings at various locations.

According to the Head, West Africa, BBC World Service, Oluwatoyosi Ogunseye, “Harassment of journalists who are simply our reporters should not have to face physical threats or intimidation and we call on the authorities to take action to protect the freedom of the media.”

Dooshima was assaulted while filming a procession in front of the Benue State government house, while on March 9, Ajoke was attacked by Mr. Segun Adewale, popularly known as Aeroland, a prominent member of ADP in Alimosho Local government at a polling unit along Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

The BBC said complaints have been lodged with the police regarding both incidents.
