Who and what organisation is saying what, sharing ideas, experiences and resources at the ongoing International Journalism Festival #ijf19 | 13th edition | 3-7 April 2019 in Perugia, Italy. We bring you daily top tweets from the conference
Arrogant business model
Journalists need to be part of developing future funding models to be independent and able to report (and “you’ll miss us when we are gone” is not a business model).
Background on my #IJF19 panel w/ @kapur_ritu @RosanSmits @tomstandage 1/8
Stereotypes against women
“When women do appear in the news they are more likely to appear as victims than men, and when their views are expressed it is often to share their personal experiences. When we do make an appearance is more often in a way that perpetuates stereotypes” Melanie Walker #ijf19
Readers need to verify
If we pretend that only journalists verify the news on social media, we are in a big trouble.
Users too have to verify what they found.

@journalismfest @philipdisalvo
The need for diversity
“Diversity improves our content, our fairness, balance, it helps us find stories we wouldn’t be able to find, it gives readers perspectives they deserve to hear. We are trying to improve our representation in gender and ethnic representation into our newsroom” @lszelenko #ijf19
What philanthropy should be in media
“It’s not about the journalists, it’s about the public. We are merely the vessels through which democracy is preserved, by making sure the public has the information they need. That is what the mission and the pitch to philanthropy is and should be.” @vivian #ijf19
Character assassination
“I’ve done damning investigative stories, but clearly they could not target me with facts. So when you cannot target someone with facts, in a patriarchal society like India it’s easy to discredit a woman’s work by character assassinating her.” @RanaAyyub #ijf19
The need for resources
“In school, I learnt that a trustworthy press is the immune system of democracy. In 2016 we had a wake-up call. The press as the immune system didn’t do so well, so it was incumbent of people like me, who have resources, to put my money where my mouth is.” @craignewmark #ijf19
How to fight disinformation
“Why are we here? Journalists need to come together. We need to learn new skills. … If we share and work together, we can fight back.” Important and inspiring talk by @mariaressa on how the journalistic community can respond to disinformation and political attacks. #Ijf19
What we should not be proud of
The culture in newsrooms is and should be changing.
– „Care about your staff.“
– „Listen to your people.“
– „A high-stress level is nothing to be proud of.“
Word. @Zielina @zziomecka @cristianlupsa #ijf19 @journalismfest
Good corporate culture
«We don‘t just want to do great journalism but also want to be the place where you like to work most. Too often, corporate culture only emerges in passing.» – @cristianlupsa about building a corporate culture in newsrooms. #ijf19
Diversity in newsrooms
#IJF19 “We need to bring more diversity in the newsroom, only way to show a more broad vision of the world” pic.twitter.com/voGHKwQpYR
We need to see the ‘black box’
“We have two important tasks. One is forensics, but we also need to go and witness things that the public can’t see, places where nobody can bring a camera. One of those places is ‘the black box’, automation, algorithms that are driving so many decisions.” @JuliaAngwin #ijf19
Our untold stories
“Journalists are used to telling other people’s stories, but have often been bad at telling their own story”, says @amichel, when pitching to recruit and retain members we need to be able to tell our story in a way that resonates with people #ijf19 panel on membership.
Rules of collaboration
Is philanthropy the answer to save journalism ? @arusbridger previous editor-in-chief of @guardian : “The rules should be clear from the beginning in collaboration with philanthropists. Transparency is fundamental.” #ajmunine #ijf19
What investigative journalists need
Tenacity, no fear of being disliked, resources to keep going. Things you need to be an investigative journalist via @newsbrooke @jamesrbuk @anyaSIPA and Alice Ross #ijf19
