To enhance reporting of child labour issues in the country, Sharon Ijasan of Television Continental (TVC) is to get a N2 million grant.
The grant by an anonymous donor was announced on Monday at the 14the Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting ceremony in Lagos by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Reporting (WSCIJ).
Although Ijasan was the runner-up in the Television category for which there was no winner and got N50,000 cash prize for her story on for her two-part report, “Child rights, labour laws violated by Chinese companies” the grant was announced for more detailed reporting of child labour in especially Chinese companies in the country.
Ijasan was the 2018 winner of the Television category of the award.
The grant according to the Secretary of the Centre, Mr Jiti Ogunye will cover the publication of a compendium of the abuses and follow up report on the winning entries.
Commenting on the award ceremony, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Femi Falana commended the winning entries but said journalists should not stop at reporting human rights abuses but advocate for the stoppage.
“ After reporting about child labour issues for example, we must ensure that the violation does not continue through follow up reports and demanding for necessary actions to be taken by government agencies,” he said.
